Ultrasound Machines
We are particularly interested in breast ultrasound for diagnosis at Frenchay. Simon Cawthorn first started using one, which was bought by our BUST (Breast Ultrasound Scanner Trust) charity, in 1992. This was the early days of breast ultrasound, but it is now regarded as essential. In most clinics ultrasound is done by radiologists and the women is sent for this to be done in the same way as a mammogram. It is however very useful to be able to "marry up" the feel of a lump with its appearance on ultrasound and here the surgeons and clinicians do their own ultrasound on virtually every patient seen in the clinic, gaining a lot of experience in the technique. Ultrasound is used not only to help diagnose lumps, but also to guide biopsy needles. It is also very useful in assessing women under 30-35 where mammograms are not very useful and it doesn't use radiation
Two more portable machines quickly joined the first one, a larger more up to date one was added in 1996 and 2 others in 1999. As our expertise has grown and the sophistication of ultrasound machines has moved on at a greater pace than most medical technology, we decided, with money from BUST again, to buy 3 new machines which were delivered in March 2001.
We bought yet another more up to date machine in 2002!
